Email marketing is a proven and incredibly effective way to connect with your target audience.

But what should you write about?  How do you get people to open your emails in the first place?  What makes an effective headline?

That's what email copywriting is all about.

In this AMA ask me about email copywiritng and storytelling so you too can become an Utterly Compelling Email Copywriter.

Let's get started!

What was one of your biggest setbacks, and how did you overcome it?

Nov 14, 1:07PM EST0

With email copywriting?  I think the most difficult aspect was knowing what to write about and coming up with ideas, that's why I turned to applying storyteling in my email copy.

How did you get into Copywriting?

Nov 14, 10:06AM EST0

I have always been interested in the power of the written word.  I started out writing articles, blogs and copy for myself and then extended it to a service I provided for others as I got better.  I learned more about copywriting (i.e. putting together words that influence/sell) and progressed from there. .

I've written a several sales letters (sales pages), but need to improve that skill.

I know that there are a lot of products out their that alledgedly teach this, but the ones I've seen bundle with it other things that I've already mastered. What's your best advice for how I can master this particular skill?

Nov 13, 1:50PM EST0

I would be inclined to check out sales letters that you come across, and see how you think you can improve upon them.  Break them down into components and see how they work.

I came across this article recently which breaks down a sales letter: https://digitaldomination.com.au/best-sales-letter-ever-written/

Some people provide sales letter templates that you can use to go through what is required when writing a sales letter to make sure you have all the necessary elements.  These are guides, not set in stone.

What business expenses can I write-off & what are the rules surrounding this?

Nov 10, 5:34AM EST0

I am afraid this is not within the scope of this subject or my expertise.  I would seek advice from an accountant.

Do I need to constantly create new content?

Nov 10, 2:40AM EST0

Not necessarily.  You can repurpose content (i.e. a blog post you have written previously) or even curate content from others (i.e. share useful links to other resources and articles).

You can also share details of products/services you already provide.  The main thing is that you are providing useful and relevant information to your audience.

Do I really need to set up an autoresponder sequencer for new subscribers, and should I 'sell' them something in the last email (of the autoresponder sequencer)?

Nov 9, 8:07PM EST0

It's not mandatory, but having a welcome email is a nice way to introduce people to your list, and an autoresponder can then let people know what to expect from you and introduce them to your product/service or launch.

You don't have to sell in your last email in the sequence either.  The key is to know what your main objective is, i.e. what do you want to do with your list.   Some people sell in every email, if that works, then that's fine too.

Know your audience, but don't confuse them.

Nov 10, 6:59AM EST1

Do you have Facebook?

Nov 9, 10:38AM EST0

Yes.  This is my business page: https://www.facebook.com/KreativCopywriting/

Nov 14, 8:42AM EST0

What is content should an email have?

Nov 9, 9:30AM EST0

Content can be anything that will be of interest to your audience.  Can you expand on your question a little more so I can give you a fuller response?

Nov 14, 8:43AM EST0

How often should I post fresh content on my email?

Nov 9, 5:51AM EST0

This is entirely up to you.  Some people even post daily emails to their list, others post weekly, and some monthly or even less regularly.   I would say that whatever you decide upon, make sure you are consistent.

That's not to say that you cannot go from emailing say monthly, to then emailing daily, just let your list know what you are doing.

Hope this helps.

Where are you based out of?

Nov 9, 5:27AM EST0

I am based in Europe.

Can social media marketing really help my business?

Nov 9, 1:55AM EST0

Social media marketing can be a very effective way to build and engage with your audience and promote your products.  If you are interested in social media marketing, I would look up 'social selling' on the internet,  There are lots of resources that can help you.

Nov 9, 8:21AM EST0

Do I need to send an email newsletter?

Nov 8, 11:20AM EST0

No, it's not compulsory.  But it is an effective way to communicate with people who are interested in your services or product.   It can be used in many ways, to relay news, promote and sell products, or just keep people interested in what you are doing.

Nov 9, 8:25AM EST0

Isn’t social media marketing taking the place of email marketing?

Nov 8, 11:07AM EST0

I would say that used in tandem, both can be powerful.

For example, once you have attracted an audience on social media you could then invite them to join your email list and communicate with your audience direct via email.

The trouble with relying soley on social media platforms is that they can change rapidly, people don't see your posts, or you may need to start paid advertising on the platform to get the same reach you did before.  In some cases platforms can cease to operate altogether.

When you have your own email list, this is something you own.  There is a saying that you should not build your house on other people's land.

I don't think social media marketing is taking place of email marketing, I think they are both evolving together.

I prefer to utilize both.  Hope this answers your question.

Is email marketing still effective?

Nov 8, 1:24AM EST0

According to the statistics, it is still very much alive and kicking.

Take a look at these stats:

https://optinmonster.com/email-marketing-vs-social-media-performance-2016-2019-statistics/

Emails have the advantage of being delivered direct to the recipient, and they normally read the contents alone. It has a much more 'personal' feel and when targeted correctly, can be extremely effective.

What should I consider before starting a career in email copywriting?

Nov 7, 8:51PM EST0

There are a few things, the main one being that you have a steady stream of clients.  Some copywriters focus entirely on email copywriting and set themselves up as such, whereas others will have it as a service they offer in addition to their other skillsets/services.

You would want to ensure your emails are effective too, so if you have the opportunity I would start your own email list first and test, test, test...it's the best way to learn what works and what does not.

Does my company really need a blog for social media marketing?

Nov 7, 6:42PM EST0

Not all companies need blogs, depends on your marketing strategy.   If you are going to do content marketing, then you will need a platform for your content.

I personally would ensure I had my own platform for my content (i.e. blog or website) as opposed to relying entirely on a platform owned by someone else.

Nov 9, 8:40AM EST0

Is this what you do full time, or just for extra money?

Nov 7, 3:51PM EST0

I am a full-time copywriter.  It can be a full-time or part-time role. When people are transitioning from working for a company to working for themselves as a copywriter, some do it part-time first.

Nov 9, 8:13AM EST0

Which is your favorite book?

Nov 7, 3:15PM EST0

That's a very good question.  I love lots of books, not sure I have a favourite, but for me the most memorable were The Byerley Turk (a book about the first thoroughbred horse) by Jermy James, and The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene (has some great stories).

Nov 9, 8:11AM EST0

What inspired you to get into this industry?

Nov 7, 1:01PM EST0

I have always had an interest in writing and storytelling, so when the opportunity arose for me to start my own business, I took it.  Thank you for your question Poorvi.

Nov 9, 8:08AM EST0

Would you say you have to be extremely social in order to do network marketing?

Nov 7, 11:37AM EST0

I am not a network marketer, so I don't know the answer to your question.  I think you would need to have the right training/guidance, know how to attract an audience and how to sell to that audience.

Nov 9, 8:38AM EST0

To sign up to lots of email newsletters and see for yourself which ones you think work and which ones do not.  Also read widely and write as often as you can.  Practice makes perfect.

I would also suggest you study copywriting.  You don't have to take a course, but you should research, read and learn as much as possible - and then put what you learn into practice.

I have a course for email copywriting, and I also run a FB copywriter group you can join.

Nov 9, 8:36AM EST0

What qualifies as content?

Nov 7, 8:36AM EST0

Content is the information contained within the email which is directed toward the end-user i.e. the reader.

The content of an emaill can include, but is not limited to, images, promotions, news, updates, videos, announcements etc.  That's the beauty of email, you can include any content which helps your end goal.

I hope this answers your question.

What 3 books would you recommend that every business networker owner should read?

Nov 7, 8:35AM EST0

Do you mean network marketer?  I am not in the network marketing industry but I understand Eric Worre and Ray Higdon are experts in this field.

Nov 9, 9:06AM EST0

Am I guaranteed to make money in this way?

Nov 7, 5:42AM EST0

No.  There are no guarantees.  But if you can write compelling emails that engage your audience you have a much higher chance of success.

Nov 9, 8:32AM EST0

Do you need to know web development or programming?

Nov 7, 5:22AM EST0

No, web development or programming is not required.

Nov 9, 7:33AM EST0

Did you go to school for this?

Nov 7, 12:38AM EST0

No, you don't need to go to school, but there are copywriting courses you can take to help you become a better writer and teach you about copywriting.

Nov 9, 7:32AM EST0

What is the best performing Network Marketing company currently & why do you think this is?

Nov 6, 8:44PM EST0

I am afraid I have no idea, this is not a subject I cover.
